ln the Beginning...
A BEAUTIFUL NEW SCHOOL OPENS IN EAST FLATBUSH
It all goes back to 1927. That waS the year the New York City Board of Education noted that a significant number of new school buildings would have to be erected to handle the growing registration, which now stood at over a million. Scores of new schools were de- signed arid buitt over the next few years, with one in particular ordered for construction in East Flatbush. Work began on Samuel J. Tilden High School in 1928, and was readY forthe Spring term beginning in Feb- ruary,1930. Tilden was one of the largest schools ever built, occupying two full city blocks and standing 3 stories high. lt cost two million, five hundred thousand dollars, and was heralded by the local newspapers as “the most modern secondarY schoolever designed.”
